Hana O'Looney Sworn in as SMOB

The MCPS SMOB(Montgomery County Public Schools Student Member of the Board of Education) is a position held by a MCPS junior or senior. Each year, an election-open to all MCPS secondary(Middle and High) school students-is held. This year, the two finalists were Hana O'Looney and Henry Kaye. Hana O'Looney won the election with almost 80% of the vote. Both candidates were from Richard Montgomery High School, and Hana O'Looney was endorsed by the school's newspaper. In their endorsement, the Richard Montgomery Tide said that, "There has not been a better candidate for the SMOB position in MCPS’s recent history."

Yesterday(7/1), Hana O'Looney was sworn in as SMOB, and while the Board of Education welcomed the 44th SMOB, they had to say goodbye to the 43rd SMOB, Nick Asante. After introductions by Board President Brenda Wolff, Hana O'Looney took her oath, and then took her seat at the Board of Education and gave a speech about how she will be sharing her seat with the rest of the students by listening to everyone's voices. She echoed the message she shared earlier in her campaign that COVID did not break MCPS, but rather exposed what was already broken.  Board Member Pat O'Neil noted that now she was not the only O-apostrophe on the board(O'Looney also contains an O-apostrophe).

Saying Farewell to Nick Asante

Nick Asante gave his last speech as SMOB after Hana's first speech in the same position. His speech was mostly centered around thanking everyone who helped him. Following his speech, other Board Members thanked Nick Asante and welcomed Hana O'Looney. Nick Asante was awarded a proclamation from the Montgomery County Council recognizing his service, and before he left, president Brenda Wolff gave Nick Asante his reserved parking sign in a Board of Education Tote bag.
